Les Chagossiens se sont battus pour obtenir un passeport BIOT qui ne soit pas un passeport d'exclusion. Ceci était important pour chaque Chagossiens. Mais deux groupes ont revendiqué spécialement: le Groupe Réfugiés Chagos (GRC) (son action devant la Haute Cour de Londres a été déterminant pour reconnaître l'existence du peuple chagossien, existence sans laquelle un passeport n'a pas de sens) et le Conseil Insulaire de Diego Garcia (qui a fait un sit in de trois jours devant l'ambassade britannique en mars 2001 pour obtenir un passeport britannique avec pleins droits). Le GRC a aussi fait en novembre 2001 une liste de 10 revendications parmi lesquelles il y a une demande pour ce passeport britannique avec pleins droits. En mai 2002, les Chagossiens ont obtenu ce passeport britannique avec pleins droits, ce passeport est aussi un passeport avec "European Union" au sommet. Les Chagos ne sont plus une colonie depuis le 21 mai 2002, mais un territoire d'outremer de la Grande Bretagne.

The Chagossians fought to obtain a BIOT passport that was not an exclusion passport. for each Chagossian this was meaningful. But 2 groups have made a major contribution: the Chagos Refugees Group (CRG) (its lawsuit at the London High Court was crucial for the very recognition of the existance of the Chagossian people, existance without which a passport is sensless) and the Diego Garcia Island Council (who organized a 3 days sit in, in front of the British High Commission in Port Louis in March 2001 to obtain a full British passport). The CRG has also done in November 2001 a list with 10 claims, the full British passport being one of them. In May 2002, the Chagossians have finally obtained this full British passport, passport bearing the title "European Union" on the top of the front page. The Chagos are no longer a colony since May 21 2002. They are a British Overseas Territory.
